A large amount of people who live in desert areas have a fear of scorpions. Most people have grown up hearing about the severe pain that is caused by a scorpion’s sting. Everyone has heard stories of people putting on their shoes or boots only to get stung by a scorpion that was resting inside. The fear of scorpions has increased even further with the knowledge that the sting of certain scorpions can even cause death. However, all scorpions are not created equal. The simple fact is that some scorpions are much more dangerous than others. If you live in an area where scorpions are common, it is important to be able to distinguish the various types that you might encounter on a daily basis. This article will focus specifically on the differences between the Desert Hairy scorpion and the Bark scorpion.

Bark Scorpion

While both the Desert Hairy and Bark varieties of scorpion deliver a venom when they sting a person, the Bark scorpion sting is more lethal. The Bark is one of only a few varieties of scorpions in the world that can kill a person. Their sting is also capable of causing allergic reactions and other serious health problems. Elderly people and infants run an especially high risk of developing health problems if they are stung. It is light brown and one of the smaller scorpions. A male adult can grow to 3.14 inches in length. The female can grow to 2.75 inches. While both the Desert Hairy and Bark varieties of scorpion deliver a venom when they sting a person, the Bark’s sting is more lethal. This is the most venomous variety of scorpion living in North America. Vomiting, tingling and numbness are common symptoms of a sting. These symptoms usually last 24 to 72 hours. Bark scorpions are unusual because they are the only variety in the southwest that are capable of climbing trees, walls or anything with a rough surface. They prefer an upside down orientation. People often get stung because they like to rest on the bottom of objects.

Desert Hairy Scorpion

This variety of scorpion can be distinguished by its large size. It is the largest scorpion in North America. It can grow to a length of 5.5 inches. This large size enables it to eat snakes, lizards and other scorpions. It is yellow with a top that is darker than the rest of its body. Its pincers resemble that of a lobster. It is called a hairy scorpion because its body is covered with brown hairs. These hairs enable it to sense vibrations that are caused by other animals or insects in the soil.
