Desert Hairy Scorpion

This variety of scorpion can be distinguished by its large size. It is the largest scorpion in North America. It can grow to a length of 5.5 inches. This large size enables it to eat snakes, lizards and other scorpions. It is yellow with a top that is darker than the rest of its body. Its pincers resemble that of a lobster. It is called a hairy scorpion because its body is covered with brown hairs. These hairs enable it to sense vibrations that are caused by other animals or insects in the soil.
